Q & A with Kate (Click here!)
What's the story behind Kingfisher Activities?
Having worked as a PE teacher for the past 14 years at The King's School, Ottery St Mary and Exeter School, I decided to take the plunge, leave full time teaching (taking a part time PE role at Stover School) and set up Kingfisher Activities. My passion for education and sport was the main driving force to set up the swim school and the holiday camps. I have always believed that every child in an educational setting should feel a sense of belonging, enjoyment and success; regardless of the sport or activity. I very much want to provide experiences for children that are engaging, enjoyable and promoting of individual progress.
Is swimming your favorite sport?
Whilst at primary school, I was fortunate enough to swim for a local club once a week. However by the time I was 11 years old, other sports took precedence such as horse riding, cross country, netball, hockey, tennis, cricket and athletics. Hockey became my "main" sport into my late twenties, playing for the West of England and at National League for Exe HC for a number of years until injury put a stop to my hockey career. Alongside hockey I was fortunate enough to represent Somerset in sports such as cross country and cricket as well as going to Nationals in athletics for the 4 x 100m and the javelin.
It has been in the past 3 years that I have rediscovered my enjoyment and passion for swimming. Currently I swim for the masters at Tiverton Swimming Club and Exe. I haven’t entered competitions in the past year due to work and setting up the business, but in my first ever competition I came 2nd in my age group for 50m backstroke, 3rd in the 50m and 100m front crawl and 50m butterfly at the Cornish Masters event. In addition I enjoyed my first open water swimming event at the Exmoor competition, winning my age group for the 2km event. At Exeter Junior School, I very much enjoyed heading up all of the swimming, spanning from curriculum lessons to the competitive squad. Over the past 5 years, I thoroughly enjoyed taking swimmers at U11 and U10 level ,to the Nationals in London at the Olympic 2012 Aquatic Centre.
If you had one superpower what would it be?
Time travel. It would be both fascinating and terribly exciting!
If Spiderman and Batman were to have a battle, who do you think would win?
What a question! I would have to say Spiderman; anyone who can fly from place to place using a spiders web gets my vote every time!
If you had to choose to be an animal, what would you choose to be?
A cat. Lazing around in the sun all day- what's not to love?!
What is the strangest Amazon purchased you have nearly made?
A golden sparkly pumpkin! My brother owns a pick your own pumpkin site (The Jolly Group- Jolly Pumpkin) and I own the café. I nearly bought the sparkly pink pumpkin to decorate the café and pizza tent!
